The Brief

For this academic study, I developed two interior finish schemes for the same Dakota apartment, each shaped by a different hypothetical client’s lifestyle, budget, and needs. Focusing on the gallery, living room, and dining room, I explored how materials could preserve historic character while supporting contemporary life.

#1 Curated Anomaly - Historic character meets joyful family life.

Designed for a family with children and large dogs, *Curated Anomaly* balances expressive color and texture with durability, indoor air quality, and wheelchair access for a visiting grandparent.

Inspired by Kelly Wearstler’s DTLA Proper Hotels interiors, checkerboard flooring, hand-painted ceiling by local artist, warm reds, and blue-green hues give each room an identity. Budget-conscious finishes and performance upholstery support a welcoming home made for daily use.

#2 Ceremonial Grace- A sanctuary shaped by hospitality.

For a well-traveled entertainment professional who enjoys hosting, "Ceremonial Grace" pairs refined craftsmanship with wool-free textiles.

Singapore Airlines’ sarong kebaya and Oberoi Hotels inspired a palette of walnut, green marble, brass, silk, and rattan. Peranakan-inspired latticework adds cultural reference, creating an intimate setting for gathering and retreat.

Designing with Care

Both schemes approach sustainability through respect for existing architecture, research into lower-emitting finishes, durability, and maintenance. Every material choice connects to the person, the place, and daily life—supporting interiors that hold meaning, welcome loved ones, and make room for joy.
